The self destructive 'gangster' persona was starting to be actualized but unlike 'all eyez on me' it wasn't necessarily center stage. this is represented best on me against the world.Īs illmatic dropped following the release of his first two albums everyone in the industry was pressured to step their game up and with this record a new echelon was reached. I've always felt 2pac has a song for you no matter what mood ur in. as a musician Pac spent less than 2 years in LA and this was his last album before going to jail and signing to death row. I always find it amazing that this album went double platinum the year it came out with how depressing most of it is You can really notice it in this album with songs like Lord KnowsĮdit: one more thing I wanted to add. I'll try and find a link but there's a good interview with Shock G where he compares 2Pac's delivery with how MLK used to give speeches. I think a lot of times people get carried away with 2Pac being a symbol of lewronggeneration-ers, but he deserves to be mentioned amongst the greatest of all time. Yes, 2Pac doesn't have the greatest flow ever, but few do. This is my favorite album to listen to while driving at night because it's just so melancholic and always gets me thinking. That any day you could get killed in a driveby, so you might as well just smoke blunts and down henny. The album is mostly characterized by this brooding sense of nihilism. You have the gangsta pac (Outlaw), the social activist pac (Me Against the World, Fuck the World), and the paranoid, introspective pac (If I Die 2Nite, Lord Knows, Death Around the Corner). This is by far my favorite 2Pac album because it combines all of what makes listening to 2Pac great. I see people saying he's overrated and that he doesn't have an album with no filler. that young excitement hard to maintain over time, and i'll take any kindling reminder to keep that fire goin ya know?įor whatever reason this sub doesn't like to give pac his props. I appreciate Old School more and more with every day i get older.

between the militantism, social activism (wanted to start having free shows for HS students who got C's or better), always having a book and the unbrideled confidence, Pac radicalized me. not sayin big didnt have the same, but pac was on another level for me. there was more struggle, and thats what im always lookin for in my top tier mc's. Pac's life is the better story, more relatable in the blues sense. I rep the shit out of ny any chance i get, but will take pac over big any day of the week. not only that, but sayin these things got him to the level of fame he reached which meant millions of others felt the same. it was some reassurance that all these fucked up things going on in the world were not just localized to your own self, but someone else saw it too and was just as mad. there was this unquestionable truth and honesty in Pac's bars that hooked me in, something i didnt find really anywhere else till i got into hardcore. I used to loop Lord Knows almost every day back in high school this is one of my favorite albums ever made. !!!! DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE !!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged. How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!! This is your chance to practice being a critic. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Going double platinum, Shakur became the first artist to have a number one album while serving a prison sentence. It shows Shakur markedly more confessional, reflective and soul-baring than his previous releases and deals with themes of loss of innocence, paranoia and self-loathing. A product of his impending prison sentence and various other legal troubles, Me Against the World is considered by many to be his magnum opus. Released while he was in prison, the album was composed of unused tracks from the Thug Life era and from other studio sessions from 1993 to 1994.
